Visiting Artist: Simon Reynolds

The Corcoran College of Art + Design extends the roster of its dynamic faculty by arranging for appearances by professionals from around the world who have achieved excellence in their fields. Coming from the art and design worlds as well as literature, journalism, media, culture, entertainment, and fashion, these visiting artists enrich the Corcoran community with fresh perspectives and intensive interactions with students and faculty. Through these guests, students and the public alike engage with issues relevant to visual culture today.
Simon Reynolds is the author of seven books about music and pop culture, including Retromania: Pop Culture’s Addiction to Its Own Past (Faber & Faber, 2011), Rip It Up and Start Again: Postpunk 1978-84 (Faber & Faber, 2005), Energy Flash: A Journey Through Rave Music and Dance Culture, (reissued in updated form 2012 by Soft Skull; originally published in America as Generation Ecstasy: Into The World of Techno and Rave Culture, Little Brown 1998). He started his journalistic career in 1986 as a staff writer for the British weekly music paper Melody Maker and then went on to freelance for magazines including New York Times, Spin, Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Artforum, The Wire, The Guardian, The Observer, Slate, and Frieze. He maintains a number of blogs centered around the hub Blissblog http://blissout.blogspot.com/. Born in London in 1963, he spent most of the 1990s and 2000s in New York, and currently lives in Los Angeles.
